Sheryl MacKay

The popular CBC Radio 1 show North by Northwest, presented by Sheryl MacKay, was hosted from Fernie Heritage Library on Saturday July 23. Blacksmith Sandra Barrett was amongst the local artisans and artists interviewed on the live broadcast.

A large forged horseshoe and snail were two items Sandra brought along and discussed with Sheryl, to illustrate what Fernie Forge is currently making for the Fernie Miners’ Walk. The forge is holding an open house as part of the upcoming Columbia Basin Culture Tour and this topic was also included in the conversation. Sheryl MacKay’s informative weekend radio programme is always a pleasure to listen to as Sheryl seems to be genuinely interested in whoever she meets. Fernie residents were treated to refreshments served by library staff and a rare opportunity to glimpse a behind the scenes look at how the radio show is put together. Local musicians also played live  from 7-10 am MT. It was an enjoyable morning focusing on some of the creative people in our community. Thank you North by Northwest for bringing live radio to Fernie, heard by listeners across British Columbia.

July 24th, 2011 at 7:58 pmSheryl MacKay from NXNW gave more information about the Fernie Miners’ Walk during her live broadcast from Vancouver on Sunday July 24. She explained that the project celebrates the importance of mining in Fernie, both past and present. Fundraising began with Seniors seven years ago and thanks to donations from the local community is currently in progress. A large memorial statue of a miner’s head and colourful banners along a path in the grounds of Fernie City Hall form the basis of the walk. References to the natural environment are also included.
