Award winners!
Submitted by Fernie Forge on Sun, March 4, 2012
We have joined Fernie Chamber of Commerce this year, and to support them with their three day winter Griz Days festival, we entered a float in the parade on Saturday evening. The theme this year was celebrating 50 years of skiing in Fernie. Our float used mannequins to represent the Griz beside a ski pylon, pulling a skier on a chairlift to the summit. We felt that as the parade is a community event, our business name should be subtle, achieved by distributing our logo on 500 gold chocolate coins (the traditional colour for a 50th anniversary). Not enough for all the children as it turned out, but our best effort as a first attempt.
Thank you to friends of Fernie Forge Ted Shoesmith, Hosmer volunteer firefighter, and Barb Smeed (who helped us despite being knocked unconscious by a ski lift the day before), for handing out candy to children in the crowd. Thanks also to Reg Holmes, who took photos for us in the rain with an unfamiliar camera on the wrong setting. Without his help there wouldn’t be any photos.
Out of 30 entrants, we’re thrilled to have been awarded second place, winning a prize of $150. Although completely unrelated to the theme, first place went to the Avalanche City Roller Derby girls with their wonderfully creative and original roller skate. Congratulations to them.
