The 130 year old blacksmithing legacy continues at Fernie Forge

In 2004 the Barrett family moved to Canada from Britain, leaving behind their one hundred and eleven year old business Barrett’s of Wroughton to build a new forge in Hosmer, BC and naming it Fernie Forge. Ten years later they opened a second location in historic downtown Fernie called Eye of the Needle Studio and Gallery at the former Salvation Army Church.

All was well until the Pandemic, when in December 2020 David Barrett tragically died by suicide. Three years later his widow Sandra continues to work as a blacksmith and feltmaker. Eye of the Needle is open four days a week, Thursdays to Sundays. The rest of the week is spent caring for her alpacas on the acreage, forging small ornamental and sculptural designs or teaching one on one felting classes.

Eye of the Needle

Eye of the Needle has also adapted to change. Knitting yarns now make up a third of total sales as crafts continue to thrive in the wake of Covid-19. Metalwork made by Fernie Forge and others is for sale in the gallery downstairs, together with glass, felted garments, cast iron, cast pewter, local beeswax candles, honey, wool pellets for gardeners, copper jewellery and copper boxes. Merchandise from the Elk Valley Suicide Task Force is also available, with all proceeds going to this valuable new, local initiative.

Eco printing up-cycled clothing and printing on felt has been introduced to the studio upstairs, which is where Sandra makes felted commissions, takes felting classes and sells raw materials such as wool yarn and roving, yarn made from milk or peppermint, fibre from her alpacas and more for spinners, felters, knitters and others. Please come in to Eye of the Needle and see what heirlooms and modern treasures you can purchase as gifts or as a treat for yourself. Sandra Barrett will be there to welcome you, show you around the heritage building and answer questions. Ask to see her collection of over 50 felted sheep breed samples or learn more about products from local sheep and alpacas..

Fernie Forge is proud to be an authorized official reseller of DHG Dyeing House Gallery yarns and fibres from Italy and Canadian representative for The Gentle Roller wet felting machine from Australia.
